November – the Baltic herring month
Text: Ene Ojaveski. Pictures: Lauri Laan.Baltic herring is the national fish of Estonia. It is small, silvery and very agile. Thus, a perfect match for our tiny country that often does new things swiftly. Besides, Estonians have been eating Baltic herrings for centuries. Perhaps that is why we go about our business so swiftly – thanks to the Baltic herrings? That would be nice. Someone should definitely have a look into this – are the people who eat Baltic herrings somehow quicker than others?
In his book “Baltic herring, tiny nice fish”, Jüri Tuulik says that when the conversation does not get going in a company, it is a good idea to start talking about Baltic herrings. And wondrously everyone has promptly something to say or think or recommend. According to him, talking about Baltic herrings makes your eyes shine, hearts beat faster and touches your soul.
Throughout November, Baltic herrings are available at several Estonian restaurants on special menus. In Tallinn, special Baltic herring menus are offered at restaurants Ribe, Ö, Dominic, Paltz, Paat, Fahle, MEKK, Vertigo, Kaerajaan, Kadriorg and Pärl. The restaurants at hotels Olümpia, Kolm Õde and Tallink Spa and Conference also provide special Baltic herring menus. There is even a Baltic herring buffet at restaurant Gloria, although available only on pre-order. Baltic herrings can be enjoyed as a separate breakfast display at restaurant Merineitsi in Sokos Hotel Viru. In Pärnu, Ammende Villa has a special Baltic herring menu.
